The Chinese are opening their market to Polish beef

The Chinese agreed to export boneless beef from cattle until the 30th month. Thus, the embargo, which has been in force for several years, was lifted.

The website of the General Customs Administration (GACC) has posted information that from June 15, 2023, China opens its market to Polish beef. The Chinese embargo on Polish beef was introduced in connection with the occurrence of bovine spongiform encephalopathy in Poland, the so-called mad cow disease (BSE).

However, in May 2017, the World Organization for Animal Health (then OIE and now WOAH) granted Poland a status with a negligible BSE risk. “Since then, successive ministers of agriculture, chief veterinarians, Polish diplomats and representatives of the beef industry have sought the Chinese authorities to obtain export approval for Polish beef. Despite the efforts made, the Chinese side did not respond to requests,” we read on the Rzeczpospolita website.

A chance for a change appeared in December 2022. “The Chinese inspection was prepared by the Chief Veterinary Inspectorate, the organization and coordination of the stay of Chinese inspectors in Poland was carried out by the Polish Meat Association, and the beef industry covered the costs of the audit from the funds of the Beef Promotion Fund. It can be said that it was an exemplary joint operation.

Detailed guidelines will be published soon - requirements for the inspection and quarantine of Polish boneless beef.
